Network and Computer Services: Future Plans

The BIC is continually growing -- more users, more data, and more computational needs. The basic network and computational infastructure currently in place provides a firm foundation for such growth; but it requires constant maintanence and will inevitably experience some fundamental restructuring. Already, there are several such planned moves. I will here briefly mention some of the more pressing.

  • A Backup Robot, like the Exabyte 221L Tape Library, is one of the next things I need to get set up. Our current backup system is less than ideal with me periodically backing up the RAID devices to an Ultrium Linear Tape Open (LTO) drive by hand. As the amount of data stored on the BIC's RAID devices grows this will become untenable.

  • Beowulf Clusters provide an ideal solution to the pressing computational needs of the BIC. The basic idea behind such clusters is to use off the shelf PC hardware tightly integrated to achieve the power of traditional supercomputers at a fraction of the cost.

  • Virtual Private Networks (VPN), like the Linux FreeS/WAN, use Internet Protocol SECurity (IPSEC) to build secure tunnels through untrusted networks. This allows LAN secured behind firewalls to communicate with one another over the Internet.
